Walter “Pete” Franklin Luther, 73, of Asheboro, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, surrounded by the family he loved so fiercely, after a long and determined fight with lung cancer.
Pete was happiest outdoors—hunting, fishing, farming, or heading off on some new adventure. He loved working with his hands and was a talented woodworker, a craft he proudly learned from his father. At church, Pete was always ready to help, whether that meant holding the door or firing up the grill for barbecue. But Pete’s true pride and joy was his big, loud, loving family—his wife, four daughters, siblings, and the many friends who were always welcome around the Luther family table.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Flag Springs United Methodist Church, with Rev. Carol Hunter and Rev. Michael Spector officiating. In true Pete fashion, he requested to make his final entrance by tractor. Friends and family are asked to gather in the parking lot to watch his tractors proudly carry his cremains to the service.
After the service, everyone is invited to the Christian Life Center at Flag Springs for an ice cream social—because Pete believed there was always room for ice cream. As he famously said, “It slips into the cracks.” Bring your love for ice cream, and more importantly, bring your favorite Pete stories to share.
Pete was born October 1, 1952, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Clarence and Mildred Butterworth Luther, who surely taught him both his strong work ethic and his stubborn streak. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Luther and Penny Luther Spencer, and his brother, Doug Luther.
He leaves behind his wife, Janet Allen Luther; daughters, Ame Luther Kearns (Derrick), Hollie Christen Luther, Hayle Lauren Luther McClellan (Ian), and Noelle Caroline Luther; sister, Debbie Luther Nance; brothers, Johnny Luther, Michael Luther, and Timothy Luther (Jeannie); brothers-in-law, Al Spencer and Rodney Allen; sister-in-law, Debbie Luther; his very spoiled granddogs—Tank, Poppie, Diesel, and Annie; and many nieces and nephews who will forever miss him.
