Wayland S. Ingold

April 22, 1923 — September 2, 2011

Mr. Wayland Sylvester Ingold, 88, of Sophia, NC, died peacefully, Friday, September 2, 2011, at the Randolph Hospice House following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Stines officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. A native of Randolph County, NC, Mr. Ingold was born April 22, 1923. He was the son of the late Cronnie Sylvester Ingold and Florence Gilbert Johnson Ingold. He enlisted in the US Army, where he served in the 10th Mountain Division as a messenger. He was honorably discharged and awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded while serving in Italy during WW II. Following his service in the Army, Wayland married Ruth Ellen Brady. He then went to watch making school in Spencer, NC and in 1956 opened his own business, Ingold's Jewelry, which he operated until his retirement. Wayland was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans for 58 years and had also served as a Commander of Chapter 22 in Asheboro, NC. He was a founding member of the Randolph County Honor Guard and served as a regional member until he received a certificate of retirement. Wayland participated in the Veteran's History Project in 2010 and his personal narrative is archived at the Library of Congress. He attended Fellowship Baptist Church. Mr. Ingold, in addition to his parents, was preceded in death by his son, Danny Ingold; daughter-in-law, Lequita Ingold; and grandson, Daniel Ingold. Mr. Ingold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Ellen Ingold, of the home; daughter, Linda Ingold Routh and husband, Gurney, of Sophia; son, Mike Ingold and wife, Angie, of Sophia, sister, Radar Davis, of Ramseur; brother, Edward "Buddy"� Ingold, of Randleman; grandchildren, Lynn Routh and wife, Shannon, Brian Ingold and wife, Wendy, Jimmy Routh and wife, Jennifer, Lisa Kearns and husband, Greg, Mark Ingold, Jodi Skeen and husband, Tyler; great grandchildren, Camryn Kearns, Hunter Routh, Peyton Routh, Marissa Ingold, Justin Kearns, Tyler Kearns, and Brynna Skeen. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.
