Walter Lee Ward, Sr., 86, of Asheboro, died Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Sandy Ridge Memory Care in Candor. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2016 at Brower's Chapel United Methodist Church with Dr. Carl Dunker officiating. Burial will follow at Brower's Chapel Road Cemetery with military honors provided by the Randolph Honor Guard. Mr. Ward was born September 11, 1930 in High Point, the son of the late A. Clarence and Louise Evans Ward. He graduated in 1949 from Asheboro High School and in 1958 from High Point College. He was better known to his classmates as "Shot" Ward. Mr. Ward served in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Soldiers Medal. He was the dealer of Vestal Motor Company and the President of Mid-State Toyota, which is the third oldest Toyota dealership in North Carolina. Mr. Ward was a lifetime participant in golfing and scuba diving. He and his wife enjoyed traveling the world with friends, frequently combining his interest in golf and scuba diving with their international travel. Mr. Ward was a member of Brower's Chapel United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Walter Lee Ward, Jr. Mr. Ward is survived by his wife of 65 years, Earlene Vestal Ward; daughters, Wendy Ward Heafner and husband, Bill, Leesa Ward Rush and husband, Chuck; son, Evans Vestal Ward; sister, Jane Ward Davis of Snow Camp; six grandchildren, Lee Miller, Westly Miller, Lane Miller, Brad Rush, Brynn Rush and Ryne Rush; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandson. The family will receive friends at Brower's Chapel UMC fellowship hall from 12:30 - 1:45 p.m. on Friday, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Brower's Chapel Road Cemetery fund, c/o Bill Barker, 1506 Westmont Ct., Asheboro, NC 27205.
