Walter Howard Overton, 98, of Asheboro, died Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday September 26, 2020, at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Faron Overton officiating. Walter was born on November 25, 1921 in Randolph Co., to the late James Braxton Overton and Flora Honey Overton. He retired from Union Carbide. Walter loved fishing, music, playing his guitar and listening to bluegrass. He used to sing with his wife and friends in the bluegrass gospel group "The Country Echos" for over 40 years. He loved being a grandfather to many and cherished his family. He liked to travel and enjoyed going on adventures. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Callicutt Overton; daughter, Ester Frances Overton; brothers, Delbert Overton, Jesse Overton, Franklin Overton, Lacy Overton; sisters, Effie Haddock, Nettie Bell Overton, and Elgie May. Walter is survived by his daughters, Doris Irenhour and husband Ike of Cosby, TN, Mae York and husband Larry of Staley, NC; sister, Minnie Hopkins of Asheboro; brother, Clyde Overton of Moyock, NC; grandchildren, Tammy White and husband Doug of Asheboro, Tony York and wife Melissa of Liberty; great grandchildren, Hayley White and husband Bradley, Hannah White, Emily York, Andy York, Nicholas York; and great-great grandchild, Braxton Hurley. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2020, at Ridge Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC 27203.
