Mrs. Vera Mae Staley King, 88, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Calvin Harward and the Rev. John Auler officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. A native of Montgomery County, NC, Mrs. King was born August 21, 1922. She was the daughter of the late William Grover Staley and Mary Jane Lucas Staley. She attended Lambs Grove Primitive Baptist Church and was a graduate of Seagrove High School. Mrs. King was the widow of Clifton A. King. Vera lived almost her entire life on Flag Springs Road (now Zoo Parkway.) She grew up on a farm and like most people of her generation they raised all of their food and lived in a community where neighbors were there for each other. She married a Seagrove boy and the love of her life, Clifton King, who went off to fight in World War II only a month after they were married. After the war, they remodeled a house on the Staley home place, where they raised their family and lived the rest of their lives together for more than 60 years. Vera was respected and admired by all who knew her as a loving mom, grandmother, great grandmother, and a true neighbor and friend. She will be greatly missed by all. Mrs. King is survived by her sons, Gary Dewey King and wife, Sylvia of Asheboro, NC, Tony Clifton King and wife, Debbie, of Spartanburg, SC; brother, J. Paul Staley and wife, Vera, of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Ellen Avelino and husband, John, Brad King and wife, Kristen, Julie King, Andrew King; great grandchildren, Jacob Avelino, Madison Avelino, Brandon Avelino, and Colin King. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm Friday, February 25, 2011, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mobile Meals, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304, Christians United Outreach Center, PO Box 784, Asheboro, NC 27204. The family would like to express our gratitude and love to the doctors, nurses and staff at both Randolph Hospital and Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home who have lovingly cared for Vera during her illness which began on January 5th of this year.
