Swanson Smith

Mr. Swanson H. Smith, 71, of Asheboro, NC, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at The Randolph Hospice House. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Phelps officiating. Burial will follow, with military honors, at Panther Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Asheboro, NC. A native of Los Angeles, CA, Mr. Smith was born October 11, 1941. He was the son of the late Swanson Claude Smith and Ida Ell Marshall Smith. He was retired from the Greensboro Police Department and enjoyed antiques and yard sales. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his brother, Mark H. Smith, and half-brother, Ronald Miller. Mr. Smith served in the US Marines and the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee McPherson Smith, of the home; daughters, Alicia Powell and husband, Jon, of Palm Springs, FL, Sonya Sullivan and husband, Michael, of North Grafton, MA, step-daughters, Rhonda Massey, of Asheboro, NC, Angela Snider, of Hickory, NC; son, Aaron B. Smith and wife, Caroline, of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, McNeil Marshall Smith, Jessica Powell, Michael Sullivan; step-grandchild, Brooke Gordon, of Asheboro, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home.
