Samuel Roberts

Samuel David Roberts, 87, of Asheboro passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018 at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. Born June 30, 1930 in Louisville (Winston County) Mississippi, Mr. Roberts was the late son of John and Belle Bagwell Roberts. He graduated from Louisville High School in 1948, where he enjoyed playing basketball. He later attended junior college. Mr. Roberts was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and enjoyed attending church and gospel singing. He worked in hosiery for 43 years, 12 of those years he worked with JP Stevens in Hickory and he retired from Ithaca Hosiery in North Wilkesboro. After retirement he moved to Asheboro where he could be closer to his family. There he enjoyed playing golf, yard work, and spending time with his family. Mr. Roberts had a big heart for his grand and great-grandchildren; as well as the rest of his family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Dossie, Fred, James, Billy, Johnny and Bobbie Joe Roberts; sisters, Willa Bell Taylor, Margaret Porter; and infant daughter, Cathy Ann Roberts. Survivors include his wife, Gladys McHann Roberts of the home; daughter, Cathy Roberts Houston (Barry) of Asheboro; brother, Rev. Olyn Roberts of Kosciusko, MS; granddaughter, Emily Houston Thompson (Barron) of Asheboro; grandson, Nathan Andrew Houston (Kimberly) of Pittsboro; and great-grandchildren, Will Thompson, Ava Thompson, Kelsie Houston, and Mackenzie Houston. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home, prior to the service.
