Roy Matthews

Roy "Bud" Vestal Matthews was born on January 23, 1943, and passed away at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina on December 10, 2019. Roy was born to the late Oland Vestal Matthews and Mary Madeline Cheek Matthews. He was the third child of eight siblings and grew up in a loving family in Piney Ridge, North Carolina. Roy enjoyed the outdoors and built a career at Brady Lumber Company where he was a devoted worker who always got the job done. Outside of work Roy believed in having a good time. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, and watching television. One of his favorite shows was Gunsmoke. Roy was well known for his big smile, telling it like it is, and having his family and friends back. He enjoyed saying "Hey Girl" to his nieces and entertaining them with funny stories over the years. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend to those who knew him. Roy was a member of Piney Ridge United Methodist Church throughout his life. Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley, sisters Ruth Matthews and Charlotte Spinks, and brother Avohn Matthews. Roy leaves to cherish his memory, his son Leroy Ellison (Jonita) of Asheboro, two sisters Sadie Roper (Charles) and Fern Pullen, two brothers Samuel Matthews and Lonnie Wayne Matthews (Zula), and three grandchildren Tyree, Jemel, and Tanaesha Ellison. He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and extended family and friends. Roy will forever hold a special place in our hearts. The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2019, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Phyllis Coates officiating. Burial will follow at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.
