Roland Bundy

October 8, 1933 — March 9, 2022

Roland Bundy, known for his excellent memory of times past and his love of recounting a good story passed away on March 9, 2022 at Randolph Hospice House. He was born on October 8, 1933 (mother Pearl says 1932 & she definitely would be the one to know!) and raised on the family dairy farm in Jamestown, not far from the old water tower off the now Guilford Rd and not far from his grandmother Judith Mathews Bundy’s Boarding House, 106 W Main St.   Funeral services be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022, in the Chapel Mausoleum at Guilford Memorial Park, Greensboro. He is preceded in death by his parents Otis Corwin and Pearl (Barber) Bundy, Sr, his second wife Jean Blythe Bundy, and his older sister Henrietta Bundy Hester Harris (Junnie & Cleo) who he affectionately called Henri, and his half brother Otis Corwin Bundy, Jr. He is survived by his sister Sarah Bundy Hayes, his daughter Sherry Royal (Donnie) from his marriage to Jean, his children Deborah Bundy Yancey (Eddie), Jimmy Bundy (Chelle), and Kelly Bundy Donathan (Nate) from his first marriage to Joyce Summerlin, and nieces and nephews Susan Hester (Sandy), Tom Hester (Carter), Liz Hester DeBlasio (Joe), Brian Harris, Steve Hayes, Mike Hayes (Sandy), Ken Hayes (Teresa), Karen Hayes VanLare - especially his nephew Kenneth with whom he had a very special bond.Grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Sinbad Yancey, Kyle Bundy (fiancé Megan Misenheimer), Cole Bundy, Shawn Donathan and Chase Donathan (Cassidy). Great Granddaughter Keelie Donathan and one on the way, due in April; as well as a host of great nieces and nephews. Bundy, as he came to be called, left the family farm in 1953 to work for Mabie Bell making stones for terraces at the White House and US Capital, dating each one with a nail. He soon found that traveling from place to place was the best job for him and over the years drove delivery for Pepsi, Griffin Baking, Royal Crown Cola & Nehi, Taylor Biscuit, Florida Bakery, Neese’s Sausage (twice), and Made-Rite Sandwiches. Residing in Greensboro for over 60 years. As Roland drove the countryside in delivery trucks or on his motorcycle, he would stop and buy anything that he thought he could sell to someone else. He loved antiques and bargaining over the price of an item was more important than making a sale or trade. Eventually he opened his own used furniture store, Jean’s Used Furniture, 506 S Elm Street in downtown Greensboro and continued to collect and tuck treasures on properties here and there all over town. Sitting in a store was not really Roland’s style and to expand his trading, in 1982 he opened Triad Economy Moving Company, specializing in moving pianos and copy machines, with the benefit of collecting “goodies” for the store.  He expanded further jobs with the opening of Bundy Backhoe service. He knew every street in Greensboro, a remarkable accomplishment for someone with dyslexia, and he could do any mathematical computation in his head, never needing a calculator. Roland’s trademark was his ability to talk to anyone and remember every date and fact of every encounter. He enjoyed traveling over the countryside, Badin Lake with family, races and motorcycles, especially his Harley Davidson Police Special. He enjoyed Stamey’s & Country BBQ, Pavilion Italian and Stan’s Pimento Cheese.  After he retired, he watched the car races and went to Outback to celebrate whenever his driver won a race. Roland will be missed by family, friends, and the many people he engaged in conversations everywhere he went. Proverbs 18:24 NLT: There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 17:6 NIV Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.
