Robert L. Griffin

Mr. Robert Lee Griffin, 82, of Asheboro, NC, died Sunday, March 20, 2016, at The Randolph Hospice House. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at New Hope Memorial Gardens in Asheboro. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. A native of Stokes County, NC, Mr. Griffin was born February 21, 1934. He was the son of the late E.W. (Bill) Griffin and Bessie Mae Mabe Griffin. As a young man, Mr. Griffin enlisted in the Army, as had older brothers before him. He worked in Army Intelligence while stationed in Germany, and during his free time played guitar and mandolin in a country music band. While there he met his wife, Leonore, and they returned to the U.S. to begin a life together. He completed a 20 years military career with the Air Force, raised two kids at various sites throughout the country and then settled down in Randolph County, NC. Here, he worked successfully in various capacities as a Real Estate Broker until retirement. Being a natural-born musician, mechanic and beach lover, Mr. Griffin enjoyed all three throughout his life. He could play almost any instrument he took up, be it accordion, banjo, trumpet or piano. Fixing, driving and enjoying old cars was a constant in his life. He frequently enjoyed these pursuits at his retreat in Surfside Beach. Mr. Griffin is survived by his wife, Leonore Franziska Griffin; sons, Ronald Griffin and wife, Paula, of Seagove, NC, Russell Griffin of Pineville, NC; sister, Elsie Stanfield and husband, Robert, of Clemmons, NC; brother, Alfred Griffin and wife, Mildred, of Sandy Ridge, NC; grandchildren, Nathan Griffin, Sarah Griffin and Laura Mabe. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph County, PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.
