Rachel Sutton

January 8, 1931 — November 30, 2020

Rachel Oneta Sutton, 89, of Asheboro, died Monday, November 30, 2020, at Cross Road Retirement Community in Asheboro. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, December 3, 2020, at Lakeview Memorial Park, Greensboro, with Rev. Mike Barrett officiating. Born in Greensboro, NC on January 8, 1931, Rachel was the daughter of the late Harrison and Zonie Hobbs Hussey. Rachel was employed by Cone Mills after graduation from Grimsley HS, and married Jack Sutton in May 1951. She was active in church, serving as Secretary at Pleasant Garden Baptist and later joined Needham's Grove Baptist and then Crossroads Baptist. She was a leader in Girl Scouts as well as GA's for many years.  Rachel had many roles throughout her life, but the one that she excelled at and embraced wholeheartedly, was the role of mother and grandmother. She had a true servant's heart, as evidenced by her care of her parents and other relatives, and an immense capacity to love. She served as a surrogate mother and grandmother to many, and truly loved others as we are called to, with her whole heart.  She was always ready for an adventure, and over the years those included: trips to Hawaii & Alaska, cruising the Panama Canal, enjoying afternoon tea in Scotland and even walking on the Great Wall of China. Among her lesser-known adventures were teaching her grands how to roller-blade in her basement, exploring in the woods around the cabin and target practice by the pond.  We all remember her laugh, and her love of the outdoors, but most of all, we remember how she loved. She gave of her time freely, and was never too busy to stop and have a cup of tea, or just listen if you needed to talk. Her love never failed. She filled the hearts of so many, and her memory lives on in those she left behind. What an incredible life for a little girl from the mill village.  In addition to her parents Rachel was preceded in death husband Jack, son-in-law Erik Jersted, sister-in-law Betty Lou Hussey and niece Bonnie Hussey Phillips. She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Jersted of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla and Cathy (David) Wray of Climax, brother Herb Hussey of Greensboro, grandchildren Lindsey Wray of Climax and Taylor (Caroline) Wray of Charlotte, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bible Broadcasting Network, PO Box 7300, Charlotte 28241-7300.  bbn.org
