Pershing Eugene "Bud" Painter, 89, of Asheboro, died Monday, November 20, 2017 at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Friday, November 24, 2017, at Russell's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Tim Fonner officiating. Military honors will be presented by The Randolph County Honor Guard. Born January 25, 1928 in Surry County, Mr. Painter was the son of the late William 'Bill" Cox and Myrtle Painter Cox. He was a charter member of the Ulah Fire Department for 30 years. Mr. Painter was also on the board of directors and served as the fire department's chaplain. He was a Deacon at Russells Grove Baptist Church. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and he loved to garden. Mr. Painter was a great father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed. He served in the US Navy during WW II and in the US Army during Korea. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Trudy Painter; granddaughter, Amy Suzanne Gatlin; and half-brothers, Ray Cox and Johnny Cox. Survivors include his daughters, Vickie Gatlin and husband, Ricky and Donna Hayes and husband, Tim, all of Asheboro; sisters, Mildred Trivett of Mt. Airy and Katie Fleming of Wilson; grandsons, Nathan Gatlin, Nick Gatlin (Wendy), Shaun Hayes (Maria), Zach Hayes (Lindsey) and great-grandchildren, Balin Gatlin, Dylan Gatlin, Arthur Hayes, Alexander Hayes and Liam Hayes. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Friday at Ridge Funeral Home, prior to the service and other times at the home of Ricky and Vickie Gatlin. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Randolph County for the care that was given to our father.
