Peggy Matthews, 74, of Seagrove, died Monday, March 5, 2018 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church, Seagrove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Born September 28, 1943 in Durham, Peggy was the daughter of the late Otis and Roberta Coley. She was a homemaker in the home she shared with her husband. She enjoyed shopping, cooking and making her special "honey bun" cake. Peggy was a member of Piney Ridge United Methodist Church, where she served as an officer, Sunday school teacher and choir member. She was a graduate from Randolph High, the last African American high school before integration in Randolph County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Walter Leon Cassidy, Jr. and Gary Eli Cassidy. Survivors include her husband, Richard Matthews of the home; daughter, Jaynetta Butler and husband, Gil of Randleman; son, Tyrone Matthews of Charleston, SC; sisters, Mary Cassidy and husband, Carl, Bonita Brady and husband, Cleo; brother, Nathaniel Coley; grandchildren, Chelsey Butler, Casside Butler, Charley Butler, Timothe Bittle; special step-granddaughter, Peaches Fox; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church, prior to the service and other times at the home.
