Norman D. Newsom

Mr. Norman Dwight Newsom, 81, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, January 18, 2012, at The Randolph Hospice House. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, January 21, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Phelps officiating. Burial will follow at Panther Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Asheboro. A native of Randolph County, NC, Mr. Newsom was born May 25, 1930. He was the son of the late Nicklos Long Newsom and Mary Ellen Woodell Newsom. Mr. Newsom was retired from Black & Decker and he was a member of Panther Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Newsom served in the US Navy during the Korean War. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newsom was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Vaughn Newsom, and his brothers, Huey Newsom and Bryce Newsom. Mr. Newsom is survived by his son, Stephen Newsom and daughter-in-law, Lynn, of Charlotte, NC; sister, Dorothy Cooper and husband, Neal, of Asheboro, NC; sisters-in-law, Mildred Newsom, of Asheboro, NC, Irene Newsom, of Gibsonville, NC; granddaughter, Sarah Atkins and husband, James, of Bluffton, SC; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Atkins, Audrey Atkins, and Lyrah Atkins; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm Saturday, January 21, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Panther Creek Baptist Church, 2204 Panther Creek Road, Asheboro, NC 27205, or Hospice of Randolph, PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.
