Nicy Brower Schley

July 19, 1922 — April 2, 2020

Nicy Brower Schley was born in Robbins, NC on July 19, 1922 and departed her earthly life on April 2, 2020. Nicy joined Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church in Asheboro North Carolina in 1948 and served faithfully until her health began to fail. Mrs. Schley moved to Virginia in 2012 and lived with her son and daughter until her final days. At Wesley Chapel she sang in the choir for more than 60 years and served as president of the senior choir for over 25 years. She served in many clubs and auxiliaries in her church and was passionate about her work. She was also involved in many organizations outside of the church and in her community. Nicy loved to sing and one of those songs that she loved to sing, she patterned her life after. That song was "If I can help somebody along the way, then my living will not be in vain". Nicy is now singing in God's heavenly choir. Mrs. Schley was the owner of two Black businesses. They were Shoffner and Shoffner Landscaping and Nicy's Barber Shop. She was also the first female "Registered Barber", Black or White in not only Asheboro, but in Randolph County. People traveled from near and far to get their "cuts". She graduated from Odd's Barber College in Norfolk, Virginia and Modern Barber College in Winston Salem, NC. In the early 1950's, Nicy was hired by the Randolph County Sheriffs Department as a Barber for the inmates. Nicy cut hair for over 62 years. She was also employed with J.F. McCrary for 44 years. Our mother was never afraid of hard work. She has now transitioned from "her labor to her reward". In 1980, she married William McKinley Schley, who preceded her in death in 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Rev. W.D. and Wincey Shamburger Brower, her step mother, whom she loved dearly, Emma Jane Dodd Brower, six brothers, three sisters; and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Schley now leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Ida Mae Neal (Harry-deceased) of Winston Salem, NC, son Herbert Earl Street , Asheboro, NC, a son, William Percy (Shirlene) Shoffner, Portsmouth, VA and daughter Jacqueline (Walter) Biggs of Suffolk, VA. Nicy also loved her blended family of three daughters and two sons. They are Gwendolyn (Willie) Richardson of New Haven, CT, Eldora (Jerry) Allen, Randleman, NC and Brenda (Larry) Goldston, Ramseur, NC, Benjamin (Carol) Ewing, Lake Wales, FL and Hurley (Ann) Ewing of Orlando, FL. She also leaves to cherish her memory one brother, George Thomas Brower of Asheboro North Carolina, 23 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, seven nieces and four nephews. Due to restrictions for group gathering, there will be a private graveside service on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at Piedmont Memorial Gardens in Winston Salem, NC. The family will have a public, "Celebration of Life Service " at a later date.
