Newbern Franklin Douglas, 80, of Harkers Island, NC, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2025, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Born in Randolph County, NC on July 1, 1944, Newbern was the son of the late N.T. Douglas and Mary Powell Douglas. Newbern was the owner and operator of Douglas Welding for over 40 years. He was a blacksmith and made handcrafted gates and custom furniture. Many of his pieces were for Bob Timberlake and Terry Labonte. He was an avid boater and fisherman, loved being outdoors, playing his guitar, NASCAR, and Carolina Panthers football.
In addition to his parents, Newbern was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Lee Douglas; and sons, Aaron Lee Barefoot and Travis Douglas.
Surviving are his daughter, Kiesha Douglas Fraley; sons, Eddie Barefoot (Suzette), Chad Franklin Douglas; sister, Judy Delores Douglas Baker (Hubbard); grandchildren, Kendall Fraley, Brandi Barefoot, Dustin Barefoot (Sam), Dylan Barefoot, Edwin Barefoot (Jenny); and several nieces and nephews.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, 416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC 27203.
