Nellie Martin Bennett

Mrs. Nellie Ann Martin Bennett, 91, of Asheboro, NC, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at Cross Road Rest and Retirement Community. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. A. J. Kendrick and Rev. Joe Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. A native of Montgomery County, NC, Mrs. Bennett was born August 15, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Azor Martin and Iola Britt Martin. She was a graduate of Star High School where she was salutatorian of her graduating class and was a charter member of Dogwood Acres Presbyterian Church. She loved working in her vegetable and flower gardens and cooking for her children and grandchildren. She volunteered at numerous healthcare facilities and enjoyed listening to her husband's band play music. She was an avid bingo player at McDonald's and the Senior Adult Center. Mrs. Bennett retired from the Asheboro City Schools and General Electric. Her smiling face and laughter will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Cleo Bennett, and her sisters and brothers, Betty Lemonds, Jesse Lee Martin, Daniel Martin and Janie Burgess. Mrs. Bennett is survived by her sons, Delanous Bennett (Doris), of Asheboro, NC, Dickie Bennett (Kay), of Asheboro, NC, Martin Bennett (Janie), of Sophia, NC, Jeffery Bennett (Renee), of Asheboro, NC; brother, Carl Martin, of Star, NC; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Ridge Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cross Road Rest and Retirement Community, Alzheimer's Care Unit, 1302 Old Cox Road, Asheboro, NC 27205, where the family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff for their loving care of our mother.
