Robert Mitchell "Mickey" York, 78, of Asheboro, died Friday, June 26, 2026, at Alpine Health and Rehabilitation in Asheboro.


Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026, at New Hope Community Church, Asheboro, with Pastor Richard Routh officiating.


Born in Randolph County, NC, on July 30, 1947, Mickey was the son of the late David Millard York and Myrtle Bray York. He attended Randleman High School and a 1966 graduate of Nashville Diesel College.


Cars were his passion. He began his race car career in 1971 on the dirt track at Caraway Speedway in car #24. He won the "Most Popular Driver" in the Goody's Dash Series for three years in a row, and the Dash Series Championship in 1992. Mickey raced until 2004. He was the owner of Randolph Auto Parts and loved going to "Cruise-Ins."


Family was the most important part of Mickey's life. He found much joy watching his grandchildren play softball, volleyball, cross country running, basketball and baseball.


Mickey was a member of New Hope Community Church where he served on the finance committee and as the chairman and as vice president of the Methodist Men.


In addition to his parents, Mickey was preceded in death by his sister, Davene Burns, and brother, Donald York.


He is survived his wife of nearly 59 years, Barbara Jo York, his daughters, Donna Gardner (Destry), Cindy Carlyle (Jeff), all of Asheboro, and grandchildren, Courtney Carlyle and Brody Gardner.


The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church's fellowship hall.
