Mary Matlida Ray

January 1, 1934 — March 16, 2016

Mary "Boot" Matilda Ray was born January 1, 1934, to the late Vernon Ray and Lucinda Ray in Burnsville, NC. While resting peacefully at The Randolph Hospice House, she was called home on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Mrs. Ray will lay in state from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 20, 2016 at First Congregational United Church of Christ. The funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. LaShauna Austria officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial at the church. Mary graduated from Allen High School, an all girls' school in Asheville, NC. She was employed for many years as a caregiver and housekeeper for many wonderful families. Mary loved her friends and family. She loved to read inspirational books and collected delicious recipes. She enjoyed watching baseball and wrestling on television. She delighted in good food and had a wonderful sense of humor that everyone enjoyed. Mary loved giving and she loved the Lord. A member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, she was a member of the choir and always enjoyed the opportunity to praise the Lord through song. Her parents and a brother, Lockwood Ray, preceded her in death. Left to cherish many wonderful memories: her devoted daughter, Robin McLean of Randleman, NC; a son, Roy Rucker, Jr. of Morristown, TN; seven grandchildren, Tara Hill of Archdale, NC, Miles McLean of Asheboro, NC, Simaron Hill of Tillery, NC, Lemmie Hill of Randleman, NC, Travis Rucker, Derek Rucker of Morristown, TN, and Caleb Griffin of Morristown, TN; three great-grandchildren, Brionna Hill, Saniya Hill and Tequila Glasgow of Asheboro, NC; a niece, Charlene Dunn of Manassas, VA; a nephew, Lockwood Ray, Jr. of Kannapolis, NC: a devoted best friend, Lennie Fonville of Asheboro, NC; cousins, Preston Ray of Asheville, NC and Marie McDonald of High Point, NC; godchildren, Clarissa Carl of High Point, NC and Demetrice Carl of Asheboro, NC; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
