Mr. Lester Varner, 66, of 230 E. Presnell Street, Asheboro, NC, and formerly of Franklinville, NC, died Monday, May 31, 2010, at Randolph Hospital Inc., Asheboro. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 AM Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eugene E. Dean, Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow at Randolph Memorial Park. Born in Randolph County, NC, on September 20, 1943, Mr. Varner was the son of the late William and Rose Voncannon Varner. He was a member of Liberty Grove United Methodist Church in Liberty. Mr. Varner loved racing, Corvettes and traveling to the mountains. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby Voncannon, Michael Varner, W.C. Varner and Larry "Tiny" Varner. Survivors include his companion of 32 years, Carmen Caviness, of Franklinville; daughter, Renee Varner Overton and husband, Faron, of Asheboro; son, Greg Varner, of Piedmont, SC; sisters, Shirl V. Horton, of Mariposa, CA, Jean Varner Shope, of Black Mountain; brothers, Butch Varner, of Asheboro, David Varner and wife, Judy, of Greensboro, Danny Varner, of Asheboro, Donald Varner and wife, Edith, of Mars Hill; four grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph Co., P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.
