Mrs. Joyce "Tootie" Margo Stefano Galloway, 81, of Asheboro, NC, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2012, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro from complications of the stroke she suffered in 2009. A funeral service is scheduled for 8:00 pm Friday, October 19, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Father Philip Kollithanath officiating. She will be laid to rest with her beloved Stefano family on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, NC. A native of New Hanover County, NC, Mrs. Galloway was born August 15, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Victor Antonio Stefano and Hazel Mathews Stefano. Joyce graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, where she was a proud majorette and sponsor for the ROTC. She graduated from Catawba College in 1953. It was there she met and fell in love with Marvin Moore Galloway, Sr. They married in 1954 and shared 58 years together while raising four children. Joyce retired after 20 years in the Greensboro City School System, most of that time teaching at the Charles D. McIver School. There she treasured both her students and her co-workers, especially her "partners in crime" Helen Shoffner, Ann Morgan and Sarah Outterbridge. She took pride in the achievements of all her family. When her children and grandchildren were on the high school wrestling mat, there was no bigger fan in the stands than Joyce. She not only went to every match, she knew every hold and cheered louder than anyone else. She took comfort in her Catholic faith and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Asheboro. Joyce was a fighter. When she was down, it was best not to count her out. After her stroke she met the challenges of her circumstances with stubborn determination. Mrs. Galloway is survived by her husband, Marvin; her children; Marvin Galloway, Jr., Lisa Henderson, Nolan Anthony Galloway and wife, Melissa Blackburn, Kenneth Galloway and wife, Linda; grandchildren, Capt. Stephen Henderson, DVM and wife, Camille, Brandon Henderson, Capt. Eric Galloway and wife, Laura, Brian Galloway, Kelli Galloway, 2nd Lt. Jordan Peoples and wife, Silvia, Daniel Peoples, Tyler Galloway, Kendal Galloway; great grandchildren, Skyler Henderson, who always made Joyce smile; cousins, Michael Stefano and partner, Doug Collie, Rosie Binkley, Sylvia Stefano Edwards, Margaret Clayshulte, Steve Buttress, Jo Ann Maultsby Jolly, John Maultsby, Bill Maultsby and many loving members of the Norman Smith and Nolan "Gus" Galloway families. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Friday, October 19, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home. The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the caregivers who helped Marvin take the best possible care of Joyce. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage donations to Hospice of Randolph (PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204 or www.hospiceofrandolph.org) to support the wonderful work they did for Joyce and the work they continue to do for many others like her.
