Joseph Thomas "Joe" Moffitt, Sr., 90, of Asheboro, NC, died Sunday, March 29, 2015 at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2015, at Holly Springs Friends Meeting, where he attended. Officiating will be Pastor Todd Brown. Burial will follow in the meeting cemetery, with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Born October 1, 1924, in Randolph Co., NC, Mr. Moffitt was the son of the late John and Mary Cox Moffitt. He had retired from General Electric, was a founding member of the Ash-Rand Rescue Squad, and a member of American Legion Post #45. He had done lots of work in forestry and was known as the "Father of the Uwharrie Trail." He loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He was an author, having written four books. As a Scout Master he received the Silver Beaver Award, among other awards. He was very knowledgeable of herbs and plants and loved sharing his knowledge with kids. Mr. Moffitt had served in the US Army during World War II and had received three Purple Hearts. In addition to his parents, Mr. Moffitt was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Voncannon Moffitt. He is survived by his son, Joseph T. "Joey" Moffitt, Jr., of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Trey Moffitt, of Asheboro, NC, Rachel Stevens and husband, Tyler, of Bennett, NC; great-grandchild, Serinity Stevens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, NC, and other times at the home.
