Jim Smith

James "Jim" Weldon Smith, II, 81, of Asheboro, died Sunday, January 12, 2025, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.


Born in Asheboro, NC, on March 17, 1943, Jim was the son of the late James Weldon Smith and Crissie Bell Tysinger Smith. He attended Asheboro City Schools, was a former licensed funeral director with Ridge Funeral Home, and did bookkeeping. He retired from the Asheboro Fire Department after 42 years of service, 25 years as the Fire Chief. He was appointed by Governor Jim Martin to serve on the NC Building Code Council and he received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award presented for state service.


Jim tremendously enjoyed working in the yard, being outside and feeding all the wild life in their yard, such as the birds and chipmunks. Jim was an advocate in supporting various children's charities.


In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Smith, and brother, Stevie M. Smith.


Surviving are his wife, Linda Carole Chappell Smith of the home; daughters, Cammy Smith Dunn of Asheboro, Wendy Boggs of Texas; stepdaughters, Robin Trogdon (Russell) of Asheboro, Stacy Cholula of Asheboro; stepson, Justin Stegall of Wilmington; brother, T. Rick Smith (Diane) of Asheboro; 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.


The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Ridge Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Asheboro, and other times at the home.
