Jerry Lee Barnes, 79, of Asheboro, died Thursday, February 4, 2021, at Cone Health Green Valley Hospital in Greensboro. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro, with Pastor Rick Wilkie and Elder Richard Kirby officiating. The service will be livestreamed at Ridge Funeral Home's official Facebook page. Born in Randolph County, NC on June 30, 1941, Jerry was the son of the late Leo Kerrigan Barnes and Jewell Barnes. He graduated from Farmer High School. At age 15, Jerry started working with his uncle, Houston Rogers and then he laid brick with Dub Lanier. In 1968, he was one of the first firefighters at Westside Volunteer Fire Department. Later that year he went to work with the Asheboro Fire Department. He retired 31 years later as the Assistant Chief. During his time he worked part time at several places, including, Hunt's Automotive and Campbell's Body Shop. After retirement, he and Robert Fields started remodeling houses. He attended Asheboro Pentecostal Holinsess Church. He was a master carpenter and enjoyed woodworking and traveling. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Barnes. Surviving are his wife, Karen Hicks Barnes of the home; son, Todd Barnes (Donna) of Asheboro; stepson, Eric Hinson (Keila) of Asheboro; sister, Debbie Auman (Danny) of Asheboro; brothers, Kenneth Barnes (Pat) of Wilmington, Phillip Barnes (Diane) of Columbia, SC; sister-in-law, Carlene Lucas of Asheboro; grandchildren, Jimmy Barnes (Heather) of Asheboro, Chade Hinson of Asheboro, Carris Hinson of Asheboro; great granddaughter, Logan Barnes; nephews, Derrick Lucas (Angela), Darin Lucas (Holly), Daniel Auman, Phil Barnes, Jr. (Tonya); and nieces, Stacey Auman and Angela Clifton (Shane). Jerry will lie in state from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at Ridge Funeral Home.
