Janice Marie Greene, 81, of Asheboro, died Monday, August 8, 2022, at Woodland Hill Center in Asheboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2022, at Science Hill Friends Meeting, Asheboro, with Pastor John Porter officiating. Burial will follow in the meeting cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Born in Randolph County, NC on January 31, 1941, Janice was the daughter of the late Earl H. Greene, Sr. and Viola Albertson Greene. Jan graduated from Farmer School in 1958, and was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from Guilford College in 1962. At Guilford, Jan was an active member of the choir, an interest that continued throughout her life, continuing to her recent participation in the Randolph Community Choir. Jan became a member of the Society of Friends as a child with her family when they joined Science Hill Friends Meeting in 1943. Her entire professional life was spent working with Quaker organizations, beginning with her tenure as a biology teacher at Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY. She also taught at Scarborough School in Briarcliff Manor, NY and at The International School of Geneva in Geneva Switzerland. Jan worked with the New York Yearly Meeting and the Baltimore Yearly Meeting. As part of her work, Jan authored a book entitled "Fostering Vital Friends Meeting: A Handbook for Working Quaker Meetings.", published in 1999, by the Friends General Conference. This document has been cited by many Quakers who have found its guidance helpful in seeking consensus in challenging circumstances. She served as the pastor at Goldsboro Friends Meeting and at Liberty Friends Meeting. Upon her retirement from paid ministry, she was a faithful participant in her original home meeting, Science Hill Friends Meeting. Janice was a talented water color artist and accomplished pianist. In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her brother, Earl H. Greene, Jr. Surviving are her sisters, Brenda Greene of Asheboro, Vickie Greene Selden of Chesapeake, VA; brother, Roger Greene of Asheboro; nieces and nephews, Michael "Mike" Greene (Jane) of Raleigh, Beverly Greene Williamson (Recil) of Asheboro, Steven Greene (Allison) of Greensboro, Casey Selden of California, Luke Selden (Anna) of Wrentham, MA,Peter Selden of Osaka, Japan, Eliza Greene of Shelby, Lesley Greene Jessup of Trinity, Bailey Greene (Greg Lewis) of Durham; and 11 great nieces and nephews. Two days before her death, Jan shared the following quote on Facebook: "At the end of the day, it's not about how much money you made, how much stuff you bought or what you can brag about. It's about how many hearts you touched, how many people you loved, and how many lives you changed for the better."
