James "T-Bone" Thomas Matthews, 79, of Asheboro, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024, at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Oakland-McCrary Cemetery, Ramseur, with Rev. Rodney Foxx officiating.
James was born on October 7, 1944, in Randolph County, son of the late James and Elizabeth Reeves Matthews. He was a graduate of Randolph High School in Liberty, NC, Class of 1964. He retired from Eveready after 27 years then retired from the Randolph County school system after five years. He was a hard worker with a great sense of humor. James was a people person and never met a stranger. He loved to tell stories and to spread laughter, and you could always find him hanging out at the BP and Quik Chek in Ramsuer, and the Franklinville Diner. James also enjoyed watching westerns in his spare time.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his grand baby, Christina Nicole Matthews; sister, Dorothea Green; brother, Tony Leo Matthews; niece, Toni Marie Matthews.
He is survived by his sons, Chris Matthews and wife Latisha of Longs, SC, Derrick Matthews and wife Myrna of Killeen, TX; former wife, Martha Matthews; brothers, Waldo Matthews, Randy Matthews, David Matthews; grandchildren, Sebastian Matthews, Chris Matthews II, Kyla Bowles; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 20, 2024, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home of Martha Matthews.
Upon James's request, the family kindly asks not to send any flowers for the service.
