Jack Henry

December 20, 1933 — February 9, 2021

A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Asheboro on Saturday, July 17th at 3 pm for Commander Jack Allen Henry, US Navy Retired. Jack was originally from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area and attended the University of Louisville on a Naval scholarship and graduated a commissioned officer. He was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He also attended George Washington University and received a Masters Degree in Business Administration. Jack taught at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for several years but spent most of his 20 years of service aboard ship. Some of the ships he served on were the destroyer, USS Robert K. Huntington, USS Chikaskia, and the USS Rushmore. After retirement from the Navy he worked in business management for a number of years and after full retirement he was a substitute teacher in the public school system. He was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Through the years at various churches he served on Church Council, various committees, taught Sunday school, and was a Lector for the worship service, which was his favorite. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, and was an avid reader and read one or two books each week and faithfully read the Bible every morning. He was a sports fan and followed the University of Louisville’s football and basketball teams, and the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball. He enjoyed playing golf and bowling and was a USBC certified Silver level bowling instructor and gave private lessons while living in Virginia and the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. He traveled all over the United States bowling in various tournaments. In his later years, he enjoyed the fellowship of a senior bowling league. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Bessie Henry, and his first wife, Gena Page Henry. He is survived by wife Eleanor Joyce Henry, his sister June Henry Donham, two sons and two stepsons, two daughters and one stepdaughter, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
