Howard Joshua Maness

Mr. Howard Joshua Maness, 91, of Asheboro, NC, died Friday, September 21, 2012, at his residence. A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm Monday, September 24, 2012, at Fayetteville Street Baptist Church with Dr. Bruce Dickerson, Rev. Garland Hall and Rev. Bud Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. A native of Montgomery County, NC, Mr. Maness was born February 15, 1921. He was the son of the late Kelly Clayton Maness and Annie Bean Maness Smith. He had worked in upholstery, full fashion hosiery, and retired from B.B. Walker after 27 years. He was a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church, attending regularly until his health declined. Mr. Maness proudly served in the US Army during World War II under the 202nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery. In addition to his parents, Mr. Maness was preceded in death by his son, Kent Maness, three sisters and three brothers. Howard enjoyed his family and made lots of fun and exciting memories with them through the years. He enjoyed working outside in his garden and fruit trees. He loved talking to family and friends and always shared his knowledge with them. Howard was an avid lover of birds and all types of wildlife. Mr. Maness is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lola Garner Maness, of the home; daughters, Cynthia Laughlin and husband, David, of Randleman, NC, Teresa Blackwell and husband, Larry, of Asheboro, NC, Tambreia Simmons and husband, Kenneth, of Ophir, NC; sons, Kevin Maness and wife, Debbie, of High Point, NC, Dwaine Maness and wife, Wanda, of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Leland Laughlin, Stephanie Wilson, Dana Brown, Celeste Brown, Joshua Maness, Nathaniel Maness, Nehemiah Maness, Matthew Maness, Jason Maness, Brandon Maness; eight great grandchildren; and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Sunday, September 23, 2012, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fayetteville Street Christian School, 151W. Pritchard Street, Asheboro, NC 27203, or to Hospice of Randolph, PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.
