Harold C. Newby

February 16, 1948 — February 25, 2022

Harold Clinton Newby, 74, of Asheboro, passed away Friday, February 25, 2022 at The Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro. Born at the Griffin Clinic in Asheboro on February 16, 1948, he was the son of the late Ray and Ollie (Davenport) Newby. He was born 45 minutes after his twin brother, William "Raeford". According to family history they were the first set of twins born in the US in 1948. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his half brother, Roger D. Newby, and several of his best friends. Harold was a graduate of Asheboro High School in the class of 1966 where he lettered in tennis as one of their top players. In 1965 the team was undefeated for the first time in the history of the school's tennis team. He spent his summers working at the Memorial Tennis Courts and playing in the park's tennis tournaments. He attended Davidson Community College until he joined the Army in 1967. He did his basic training at Ft. Polk, Louisiana, and his WOC training at Ft. Walters, Texas, where he was on the honor guard. While training for the Vietnam War he was assigned to the 717th Air CAV as a Spec. 5. After the Army he attended Asheboro Commercial College to obtain a degree in Data Processing and Business. He was employed at Rowland's TV where he found his love of electronics and sales. He later was in business with his father-in-law, Bill White, opening Carolina Sight and Sound, which later became Ed Kelly's. In 1987 Harold opened Audiotech on Old Farmer Road where he sold and installed car stereos, speakers and radar detectors for local car dealers, Klaussner Transportation and the city and county officers. He was one of the first to sell car phones in Asheboro. He loved what he did and retired after 23 years in operation. Harold and his wife, Sharon, enjoyed traveling, but their favorite place was Harker's Island, and boating over in the "Whaler" to Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout. Harold was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed time spent with his brother and their love of airplanes. He enjoyed music, dancing, wood working, and his precious "fur babies". The bond he had with the American Legion Post 45 was very special to him where he made friendships forever. He served on the board and special committees at the Post. Left to keep his memories alive are his wife of 53 years, Sharon Newby; daughter, Laura Newby Harvey (Marcus) of Randleman; much loved twin grandsons, whom referred to him as "Grindad", Adam Ray Harvey, William Ryan Harvey, both of Randleman; brother, William "Raeford" Newby (Neva) of Sophia; step brothers, Darryl "Butch" Hendrix of Asheboro, Ron Hendrix of Charlotte; nieces, Stephanie Newby, Ashley Newby Shiver (Michael) of Greensboro, Angel Hendrix Poindexter (Doug) of Asheboro; nephews, Larkin Newby (Thrya) of FL, Josh Chriscoe (Meg) of Charlotte, Barkley Hendrix of Asheboro; great nephews, Marshall Newby, Mitchel Newby, Matt Chriscoe, Ben Chriscoe, Drew Chriscoe, Tyler Newby; mother-in-law, Helen White of Asheboro; sister-in-law, Susan White of Charlotte; special cousin, Barbara Covert and her family of Kernersville; special aunt, Joan Allred of Ramseur; and several other cousins. Also left are his breakfast, lunch, golf, fishing, snow and water skiing buddies, and Badin Lake family. He was indeed a lover of life, family and country and many friends. Please pray for those veterans still suffering from Agent Orange. A celebration of life will be conducted on National Vietnam War Veterans Day at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jimmy Truell officiating.
