It is with great sadness we share the passing of Gilbert Murray Zmithrovitch on April 12, 2025. Gil was born September 4, 1935, in Riverview, New York, which is on the Saranac River. Gil was the 3rd child of Charles and Mabel Zmitrovitch, the younger brother of Charles and Teresa, all now deceased.
Gil moved to Troy, New York, at a young age and completed his schooling at Troy High School, where he met the love of his life Mary DeLorme, who became his wife in September of 1957 and survives him. Gil and Mary had three children, Darlene Turner, Gilbert (Ellen) Zmithrovitch and Karla (John) DeHont, who also survive. Gil was also blessed with 6 grandchildren, Matt (Amanda), Kelly, Katrina (Cliff), Zach, Adam (Kaitlin) and Emma, 4 great-grandchildren, Rona, Avery, Sam and Mackenzie; and grand dog, Molly.
Gil had a long career with the General Electric Company Large Steam Turbine Division in Schenectady, New York. He retired in 2010 at the age of 75 as leader of the tool crib for the facility. His work brought him much pleasure and he spoke fondly of the people he worked with, especially the RPI students who interned there.
Gil also had a very special fondness for the Saranac area of New York where he spent his early years and shared many stories of life at that time with his parents, grandparents and other relatives.
After many years in Troy, New York, Gil and Mary decided to move south to Asheboro, NC, in late 2021 to escape the winters and be closer to their son and his family. Gil enjoyed their new home and climate, taking time to prune shrubs and mow and rake the yard and visit with family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro, with Rev. Miranda Lane officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292 .
