Geraldine (Jerry) B. Scott, 88, formerly of Draper, Virginia, passed away January 15, 2018. She was born January 16, 1929 in Besoco, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Flossie Fay Cooper Baird and Gibson Baird. A coal miner's daughter from West Virginia, Jerry was married to her childhood sweetheart, Basil Scott, for 66 years. She loved their home in Draper Valley, where she and Basil lived and collected antiques for over 40 years. She was committed to her family and worked hard to achieve family goals of a good home and a good education for her children. She loved her granddaughters, Mary and Katherine, and always wanted to know the latest news about them. She had a beautiful voice and loved her piano along with her piano students. Through the years, she played the organ, sang, and conducted choirs for multiple Methodist churches and for over 35 years gave many students the gift of music. She was a graduate of National Business College in Roanoke; she was the only woman in her class. She started, owned and operated, Roanoke and Pulaski income tax and accounting businesses from scratch, which still operate today. While her initial motivation was to ensure enough money to send all three children to college, she grew to love her work, becoming an Enrolled Agent, a credential conferred by the IRS. Mrs. Scott is preceded in death by her husband Basil H. Scott, her brother Robert C. Baird, her father Gibson Baird, and her mother Faye Baird. Survivors include her daughter Junella Macrae and husband John of Durham; sons Basil (Rocky) Scott and wife, Sue of Kauai, HI, and Dr. Robert (Bob) Scott and wife, Susie of Asheboro; and granddaughters Dr. Mary Cooper Scott and husband Scotty Fung of El Cerrito, CA, and Katherine Scott of Washington DC. A memorial / remembrance service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Asheboro at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday January 21, 2017. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Her funeral will be held at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va., at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday January 27, 2017, with the visitation occurring from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. A private burial will be held on Monday, January 29, 2017, at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, VA.
