George Joseph Porpeglia

Mr. George Joseph Porpeglia, Sr., 97, of Asheboro, NC, passed away, Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Cross Road Retirement Community. Born in Albany, New York, he was the son of the late Anthony & Carmella Vitetta Porpeglia. Mr. Porpeglia served in the US Army during World War II in the Philippines and New Guinea. He married the love of his life, Jane Ann Konis in April 1949. Together they added five new faces to the world. They lived in New York, while raising their children, until his retirement from General Electric in Schenectady, NY. Then after making a dream of traveling come true, they fell in love with Myrtle Beach and lived there for 16 years, before settling in Asheboro. Mr. Porpeglia enjoyed roller skating, where he met his wife of 64 years, dancing, camping with family, gardening and flowers. He was a life long fan of the Chicago Cubs. He loved life, his family, sharing stories, singing songs, praising the Lord, and being with his many friends at Cross Road. He was blessed to be part of the Triad Flight of Honor. He will be greatly missed by many for the love, kindness and happiness he brought to this world. We all have been privileged to have our lives blessed with the presence of such a wonderful and happy man. Mr. Porpeglia is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jane Konis Porpeglia, of Asheboro, NC; children, Darlene Marr, of Guilderland, NY, Georgene Saddlemire and husband, Andrew, of Asheboro, NC, George Porpeglia, Jr. and wife, Mabel, of Asheboro, NC, Janene Frazer and husband, Al, of Myrtle Beach, SC; James Porpeglia and wife, Karen, of Duanesburgh, NY; grandchildren, Christopher Porpeglia and friend, Jessica Mitchell, Theodore Porpeglia, Michelle Henderson, Bryan Frazer; and great grandchildren, Jamee Nicol Henderson, R. J. Henderson, Grace Ann Porpeglia, Amy Hope Porpeglia; and his canine "grand-paws" Duke, Cole and Winston. A memorial service is scheduled for 6:00 pm Friday, March 21, 2014, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rodney Otwell officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
