Frederick Carlyle Smith

Frederick Carlyle "Carlie" Smith, 88, of Asheboro, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Universal Healthcare in Ramseur. Graveside services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Randolph Memorial Park with Chaplain Tim Pheagin officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Born August 17, 1928 in Durham County, NC, Mr. Smith was the son of the late O.C. and Catherine Smith. He graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, KS and later from William Jewell College in Liberty, MO. Mr. Smith was retired from NC Governor's Highway Safety Program. He was a member of West Bend United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II. Mr. Smith was a teacher at Southern High School in Durham, where he also coached football and baseball. He was a Boy Scout leader and volunteered with many organizations. A Mason and a past member of the Scottish Rite and the Oasis Shriners. Mr. Smith was a member of Asheboro Lodge # 699 and was a past member of Andrew Jackson Lodge #576 in Salisbury and Balfour Lodge #188 in Asheboro. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jane Smith; children, Stephen Smith and wife, Kim of Orlando, FL, Marcas Smith and wife, Lea of San Antonio, TX, Kim Smith-Nagel and husband, Peter of Asheboro; grandchildren, Leslie Shevlin and husband, Tim of Salem, OR, Mallory Richards and husband, Jo of Washington, DC, Devon Smith and Zachary Smith, both of San Antonio, TX. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, at Ridge Funeral Home, prior to the service.
