Florence Koenig Smith, 68, of Asheboro, died Thursday, December 20, 2018, at her home. A private service will be held. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Smith was born August 1, 1950, the daughter of the late Sebastian and Eleanor Simonsen Koenig. Florence had received her Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University, being the only female in her class. Her career as an engineer began with the Department of the Air Force which ran from December 1972, until September 1975, and again in May 1980 through March 1991. She then worked for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center which lasted until October 2008 when she was promoted to Chief of Safety and Assurance at Wallops Island, VA, Missile Test Facility until her retirement. Mrs. Smith was a loving wife with a wonderful personality. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her son, Brian Winter. Survivors include her husband, Terry Smith, of the home; son, Charles Winter, of Violet, Il, and brother, Harry Koenig and wife, Claire, of Saratoga Springs, NY.
