Earlene Hammond Nelson, 89, of Asheboro, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home in Asheboro. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 30, 2016, at Farmer United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. J. Harold Hammond officiating. Born October 29, 1926 in Chatham County, Mrs. Nelson was the daughter of the late John and Pearl Hammond. She was a 1945 graduate of Asheboro High School and was a homemaker. Mrs. Nelson enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and gardening. She loved her cats. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Johnny Owens. Mrs. Nelson is survived by her daughter, Amy Owens and friend, Wayne Morgan of Asheboro; son, David Nelson and wife, Dawn of Asheboro; grandchildren, Julie Allman and husband, Justin, Mark Owens, Kyle Nelson; great-granddaughter, Olivia Allman; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Julie and Justin Allman. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Dr. Jerzy Sopala and Dr. Caroline Prochnau for the care given to Mrs. Nelson for the last four years. Memorials may be made to Randolph County SPCA, 300 W. Bailey St., Asheboro, NC 27203.
