Swaruparani Mulukutla Gullapalli, 82, of Asheboro, peacefully passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
Dr. Swaruparani Gullapalli -- proud mother of three daughters, beaming grandmother of two grandsons and loving companion to five playful dogs over four decades -- was a gifted listener who found her calling in psychiatry. After having trained as a surgeon in her native India, she moved with her family to the United States in 1981, first to Texas and then to Connecticut. She transitioned to psychiatry through a residency programme at Temple University, earning awards. After working at a hospital in Martinsburg, WV, she went into private practice in Asheboro, NC, in 2005 and opened Asheboro Psychiatric Services in 2008. She retired from her beloved profession in 2021, and moved, with her dogs, to both Colorado and Rhode Island to spend more time with her family.
Wherever she lived, she created a home, filling it with the scents from her cooking and her daily morning prayers, to which she was devoted. She enjoyed building her garden, tending a forest of flowers and harvesting vegetables, especially Indian ones; and she cooked delicious meals with garden vegetables and her ever-expanding array of recipes for those eagerly gathered around her dinner table.
Dr. G helped countless people in her professional and personal lives, sometimes through a single conversation. Her husband, daughters, son-in-law, grandsons, and the wide circle of family and many friends that she leaves behind will forever remember, with great love and gratitude, her kindness, loving nature, strength, radiant smile and the mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
