Donald “Don” Clark Roberts
October 25, 1937 – May 1, 2025
Donald “Don” Clark Roberts, 87, of Asheboro, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, May 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
A funeral service to honor Don’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Asheboro, with Dr. John Rogers, Pastor Stephen Owens, and Rev. Mark Hall officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service. A private burial will be held on another date at Randolph Memorial Park.
Born on October 25, 1937, in Rockingham, NC, Don was the son of the late James Horace Roberts and Avo White Roberts. A man of deep faith and unwavering devotion to family, Don lived a life marked by purpose and kindness.
Don’s academic and athletic journey began at Wingate, where he earned his Associate’s Degree and played football. He later continued both his studies and athletic pursuits at NC State, earning his Bachelor’s Degree and proudly representing the Wolfpack on the football field. A lifelong fan, he loved wearing his NC State red. He gave back to the institutions he loved by serving on the Board of Trustees at Wingate University.
Don was also an avid and accomplished golfer who found joy not only in the game but in encouraging others on the course. His four hole-in-ones are a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport.
His faith played a central role in his life; he participated in numerous mission trips through First Baptist Church and enjoyed teaching others about the Lord. He was especially proud about his work with Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief efforts, the local Kiwanis Club, and being a member of the Joyful Singers. Don was known for his warmth, generosity, and, famously, for making the “best grits in town.”
Don was preceded in death by his first wife, Lourene “Rene” Stringfellow Roberts, and his sister, Dianne Roberts Newton. He is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda Nance Roberts; his sons, Greg Roberts, Jeff Roberts, David Roberts (Kimberly), Todd Kates (Adi), and Brandon Nance (Ellen). “Pops / Papa Don” was a proud grandfather to Leah Roberts, Carmen Roberts, Erin Roberts, Logan Kates, J.T. Kates, Gabriel Kates, Maddox Shoaf, Ezra Nance, Asa Nance, and Jhobe Nance; and a great-grandfather to Althea Kates.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Attn: Missions, 133 North Church Street, Asheboro, NC 27203, or to Wingate University Athletics Department, Attn: Bulldog Club, PO Box 159, Wingate, NC 28174-0159.
Don Roberts lived a full life rooted in faith, family, and service. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
