Carroll Wesley Angel, 90, of Asheboro, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at Brookdale Assisted Living. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Burnsville. Burial will follow in Holcombe Brothers Cemetery. Born July 18, 1925 in Burnsville, Carroll was the son of the late Gaston M. and Malissa Beaver Angel. He was a member of the Greatest Generation, having served his country in WWII as a Quarter Master Third Class on the USS Bates. Carroll served on the Bates from the day it was commissioned until the day it was sunk by Japanese suicide planes. The Bates escorted merchant ships with war supplies and personnel to Europe. After participating in the invasion of France the Bates was sent to the Pacific to assist with the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The ship sank near the island of Ishema in May 1945. After the war, Carroll returned to Burnsville and graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College, now Appalachian State University. After graduation he taught in Yancey County schools, sold insurance and then worked for Mohasco Corporation, retiring after 31 years. In addition to his parents, Carroll was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elora G. Angel; by his brothers, Alvin, Derrick, Edgar and Pershing; and by his sister, Beatrice. Carroll is survived by his daughters, Dianne Vickery and husband, Michael, of Hampstead, Sheila Nelson and husband, Chip, of Asheboro; granddaughter, Courtney Thomas and husband, Michael, of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Ridge Funeral Home and from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016 at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home, prior to the service.
