Mr. Robert Wilburn "Bill"� Thompson, 86, of Asheboro, NC, died Monday, January 3, 2011, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Jarrett and J. Raiford Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro. Military honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. A native of Randolph County, NC, Mr. Thompson was born August 4, 1924. He was the son of the late George Wilburn Thompson and Maggie Victoria Hall Thompson. He went all the way through West Bend School and was retired from Energizer Battery. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clestell Staley Thompson. Mr. Thompson served in the US Army during World War II. Mr. Thompson is survived by his daughter, Marie Carawan and husband, Thomas, of Winston-Salem, NC; sister, Joyce Conner, of Asheboro, NC; two grandchildren, Susan Carawan Buchanan and husband, Todd, Scott Thompson Carawan and wife, Teresa Belton Carawan; five great grandchildren, Morgan Carawan, Katherine Buchanan, Jackson Carawan, Drew Carawan and Abigail Buchanan. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at Ridge Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Salvation Army, PO Box 1366, Asheboro, NC 27204.
