Betty Jean Landreth Layton Carlan, 85, formerly of Talladega, AL, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at The Randolph Hospice House. No services are planned at this time. A native of Talladega, AL, Ms. Carlan was born November 9, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Gene B. Landreth and Reba Hare Landreth. She attended the University of Alabama and graduated with three degrees in education and was proudly in the Million Dollar marching band. She taught school for years and was Principal at the Central Carolina School for the Deaf in Brown Summit, NC. She was an avid NASCAR fan and was the historian and librarian at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at the Talladega Superspeedway for 17 plus years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved canine companion, Ralph. Ms. Carlan is survived by her daughters, Becky L. Moore, of Munford, AL, Susan J. Layton, of Randleman, NC; cherished granddaughter, Megan K. Moore; sister, Helen L. Bussie and four nephews, Howard, Wallace, Glenn, and Brent Bussie all of Talladega, AL.
