Mr. Andy Clifford Varner, 91, of 2098 Stutts Road, Asheboro, NC, died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at Randolph Hospital Inc., Asheboro Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday at New Union United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Neil Crowell and the Rev. George Roberson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Born December 11, 1918, in Randolph County, Mr. Varner was the son of the late Frank and Daisy Varner, He was an active member of the church and choir. He worked at Asheboro Hosiery for 19 years. He also worked at Dixie Sheet Metal, General Technician and Hinshaw Sales. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved to garden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Hazel Pugh Varner. Mr. Varner served in the US Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Frances Barker Varner, of the home; sons, Eugene "Gene" Varner and wife, Brenda, of Lexington, Sam Varner and wife, Kathy, of Greer, SC, David Varner and wife, Brenda, of Asheboro; stepdaughters, Doris Allred, Donna Willeby, both of Asheboro; sister, Cora Maness, of Seagrove; grandchildren, Candice Varner and Brandon Varner; and four great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home from 6 until 8 pm on Tuesday and other times at the home. Memorial may be made to New Union United Methodist Church, 1293 Union Church Road Asheboro, NC 27205.
