Mr. John Alvin McDowell, 95, of Asheboro, NC, died Friday, March 15, 2013, at The Randolph Hospice House. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March, 19, 2013, at Pleasant Union Community Church with Rev. Danny Miller and Rev. Ken McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A native of Randolph County, NC, Mr. McDowell was born June 8, 1917. He was the son of the late Eli Linville McDowell and Martha Trythenia Pierce McDowell. He spent most of his working life operating a sawmill he co-owned with his brother and farming. He was a charter member of the Farmer Lions Club, where he served in many positions including president. He was a dedicated Christian who loved the Lord. Mr. McDowell was a lifetime member and deacon of Pleasant Union Community Church. Over the years, he served in many leadership positions. In his younger years, he played and coached baseball. He enjoyed gardening and tending his pecan trees, vacations to the mountains and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather; a kind, gentle, and humble man who cared for others and was always willing to help his fellow man. In addition to his parents, Mr. McDowell was preceded in death by his sisters, Bernice Trotter, Exie Snider, Lois Staley; and brothers, Ira McDowell, Dallas McDowell, Rev. George McDowell and Pearl McDowell. Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife, Allene McDowell; of the home; sons, John Larry McDowell and wife, Glenda, of Denton, NC, David Lenvil McDowell and wife, Bobbi, of Asheboro, NC; sisters, Vida Swaney, of Thomasville, NC, Imogene Ridge, of Denton, NC; brother, Casper McDowell, of Asheboro, NC; grandchildren, Jonathan Shane McDowell and wife, Sandy, of Denton, NC, Darren Lee McDowell and wife, Crystal, of Eureka, MO, step granddaughter, Mary Beth Kirkman, of Ramseur, NC, great grandchildren, John McDowell, Anna McDowell, Addison McDowell and David McDowell. The family will receive friends from 6:00 "� 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at Ridge Funeral Home and other times at the home.
