Mary "Joanne" Wrape Spencer, age 85, of Sophia, went to meet her Lord on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at The Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro. Funeral services will be held at Marlboro Friends Meeting at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 10, 2016 with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Joanne was born in Asheboro on July 10, 1930 to the late John Hurley and Mary Baker Wrape. She attended Catawba College and was Regional Vice President for Primerica until her retirement. She and her husband, Bruce Spencer, made their home on a dairy farm in Sophia, where they raised their family. Joanne worked at Randleman High School, where she was in charge of visual arts, was a substitute teacher, in addition to serving as secretary to Farm Bureau. She taught Sunday School at Marlboro Friends Meeting for many years and volunteered her time to the community. She loved helping people and cooking. She was known for her famous chess pies, cherry yum-yums and homemade mints. Joanne was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed making things for her family. She loved music, gardening and planting flowers everywhere. She adored her family and loved doing things for them. She enjoyed taking her grandchildren shopping and had a penchant for pocketbook collecting. She had a gift for loving on people and making them feel special. She grew up going to First Baptist Church of Asheboro, where her journey with Jesus began and happily continues in Heaven today. Joanne is survived by her husband, Bruce B. Spencer; daughters, Deborah Spencer Leonard (Eddie) of Sophia, Mary Spencer Vaughn (Ken) of Randleman; sons, Brent Wesley Spencer, Barry Bruce Spencer (Gina), of Sophia; sister, Jo Carol Thorpe (John) of Cary; brothers, Thurman McBride (Helena), Willis McBride, John Wrape, Jr., all of Asheboro; grandchildren, April Wilson (Rick), Matthew Leonard (Lana), Jason Leonard (Sandra), Kansas Akin (James), Sage Vaughn, Montana Vaughn and Kaitlyn Atkins (Kevin), eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Ridge Funeral Home on Saturday, January 9, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Assocation, 4600 Park Rd.,Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209, Hospice of Randolph County, P.O.
